Through its work Kijiji Cha Upendo directly promotes the inherent human rights of its beneficiaries. The right to equality, education, health and social security are all essential to Kijiji Cha Upendo’s mission. With subsidized school fees, the likelihood of orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS in Kibera slum attending school is significantly higher. Through community outreaches Kijiji Cha Upendo helps to ensure that community members are connected to proper health services while alleviating some of the stresses that illness in a household can cause. By providing beneficiaries with small loans at zero interest and offering training in small business management as well as workshops in livelihood skills, Kijiji Cha Upendo encourages economic empowerment within the community and allows for beneficiaries to generate income at minimal cost.
Through biweekly community forums, Kijiji Cha Upendo provides a safe place for beneficiaries to gather and learn, to share about their experiences, their setbacks and growth, their concerns and successes. This forum of knowledge plays an important part in enabling beneficiaries to make the most of the economic opportunities offered and offer support to their peers and allows them to have a voice of their own.
Kijiji Cha Upendo hopes to further promote the right to equality, specifically within government and equal representation in governmental bodies. By promoting the rights of their beneficiaries and a free voice, this goal is already being pushed. Going forward Kijiji Cha Upendo would like to see the biweekly community meetings providing more in depth education on rights of women in a public forum and their right to equal representation. Kijiji Cha Upendo engages legal experts who provide proper information as per the Constitution of Kenya.
